Alice M. Brock was a restuarant owner that lived with her husband Ray Brock lived in a former church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. She was a painter and designer, Ray Brock is a architect and a woodworker. There was one day when a couple of there friends came to see then and they was not home. When they went into the house it was filed with trash this was on thanksgiving day so they loaded up all of the trash into a van and headed to the city dump. They got to the city dump and they was closed so they drove on and they found a spot that was over a cliff and there was trash there so they dump it and went on. They went and ate there thanksgiving dinner and went to sleep and on the next day they got a phone call from the cops. They went down to the station and that is where they had to talk to the cops they told them that they found a envolpe with his name on it under the pile of trash. So they took a lot of pictures and they sent him to court but the judge was blind so he could not see the pictures so they got a fine.
Then later on he had to go to the draft office and he had to get a lot of shots and stuff and all he could say it that he wanted to kill, kill, kill and they told him that he is the man that they want. When he went to the last stop they ask him if he had been arrested and he said that he had and then they asked him if he had went to court and he told them that he has. The guy told him to wait in the hall way and out there was a lot of killers, rapers and stuff. After all of that he pretty much did not have to go because he got arrested and went to court. Back in them days whenever other people where running away so that they didnt have to go to the military somewhere just doing crimes and they didnt have to go. The main reason why I think Mr.N chose this topic was because he likes stuff about how the old days they drafted people and they allways wanted someone to get in and get it done and how back then was real different than it is now they had lots of different rules but now we have more but some of them are still the same and other are more strict.

All in all the song talks about how they did this crime and did not have to do time but when the called him in to do his duties he did not have to go because he was convicted of a crime and went to court and they did not want them people to have anything to do with the military. So you litter back then and you have to go through all the mess that they did.
Alice’s restaurant is mostly about the protest against the Vietnam War and the draft. On a thanksgiving day back in the sixties, Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins were arrested for dumping Alice’s restaurant trash illegally by Officer William “Obie” Obanhien. Two days later they pleaded guilty and fined fifty dollars. Soon after Guthrie was drafted but since he pleaded guilty for littering, he was considered unfit for the military. This worked out in his favor. The song itself goes on to tell people if they are drafted to sing the song and to become unfit to be drafted and this creates the Anti-Massacree Movement. They song was later redone to protest president Reagan polices.

In 1964 Alice bought an old church where her and her husband lived. Six miles from there was the real restaurant. The restaurant was only open for a year when Alice and her husband divorced thus closing the restaurant. The location is still a restaurant just with a different name and owner. The church was also sold until 1991 when it was purchased by Guthrie and turned into a church with all religions welcomed. Alice M. Brock was a home owner, small businesses, owner and married. After losing all of that now she is a painter and artist.

The named the song after Alice because that’s where most of the garbage came from and they were staying at house at the time. It was also Alice who bailed them out of jail. When they got out the next day it was Alice who cooked them their thanksgiving meal. The song is not about Alice but she influenced their lives enough for them to just name the song after her.

Arlo Guthrie was a traveling folk singer who lived in Massachusetts. His dad was the famous Woody Guthrie who had a great impact on the life of bob Dylan. He played for many years and was known for his protest songs. That’s all I could find.

He wrote a song about Alice’s restaurant because his whole thanksgiving adventure with her kept him from a war that he heavily protested. Plus it was catchy and it seemed like the right thing to do after he got out of jail.

This song is about the hypocrisy of the U.S. government. That only the pure and good hearted people with no criminal recorded could be sent to do bad and black hearted things. Evan a thing such as littering was too morally wrong for a person to do that they were unfit for military service. So you can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant even get out of the draft.

I think Mr. N chose this topic because he could get multiple responses with no right answers. This way he can further understands how we write and interpret stories and articles. So he can determine if we are fit for his government conspiracies. That is why I have come to the conclusion that this all a CIA test to see if our minds could be brainwashed. That is why I think he was inspired by this song.

Alice's Restaurant

One day there was a girl who bought a church and opened a restaurant. The restaurant was used on Thanksgiving Day for the Thanksgiving Day Massacre.
Alice and her husband Ray lived in the bell tower of the church.Since they lived in the bell tower they decided that they didn't need to take out their trash. They decided to just put the trash downstairs. After a while the trash began to build up and a friend of theirs offered to dispose of the trash. They decided to take the trash down to the city dump.
They took the half a ton of trash in the back of the volkswagon microbus and headed toward the city dump. Well once they arrived they seen a big sign and a chain across the dump saying "Closed For Thanksgiving." Therefore they had to find a different location to dump the trash.
They found a cliff off of a side road and they looked over to discover that there was already some trash that had been dumped down there, so they decided to throw the bags of trash on over the cliff. Afterwards, they drove back to the church and ate Thanksgiving dinner.
The next morning they received a phone call from a police officer. The officer said they found an envelope at the location where they had dumped the trash that had their names on it, and was wondering if they knew anything about it.
The truth finally came out of the person. The officer said they had to go pick up all the trash that they dumped. After they picked up the trash, they had to come down to the police station to have a talk.
Once they arrived, they were put into handcuffs and put in a cell. After about five hours, Alice came and bailed them out and took them back to the church.
In my own opinion, I believe that Mr. Neuburger would be inspired by the life story and he could be inspired by the trouble that Alice's friends went through and was still Alice's friend. Alice is a good person and naming tour blogger after this song could occur because Mr. Neubuger believes there is good in everyone. You can succeed if you just try.

Alice's restaurant is a restaurant that Alice and her husband Ray opened. When they first bought the restaurant called "Back Room Rest" then Alice changed it to name it after her. Alice and her husband ray lived in a church in Great Barringtion, Mass., about six miles from the restaurant which was in Stockbridge, Mass. They bought the church in 1964. They both started to clean the church out with accumulated a lot of garbage. The church was about six miles from the restaurant which was in Stockbridge, Mass.
The whole thing started on Thanksgiving day in 1965, a man by the name of Arlo Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins were taking the garbage out for there good friend Alice. When they went to dump the trash, the dump was not open because it was a holiday so they left and was looking for another place to dump the garbage, they came across a back road that had a big cliff on it and saw garbage already at the bottom. So of course like any person thinks if one person did it why can't I so they went ahead and through it with the other garbage at the bottom of the cliff. After they did that they went back and ate there Thanksgiving dinner and went to bed. The next day they woke up to call from the police station. With an officer by the name of Officer Obie and he said I found this envelope at the bottom of this garbage pile, that has your name on it is it yours. Arlo said sir I can't lie I did put that envelope at the bottom of the trash.
Who is Alice? Alice is a friend of the song writer Arlo Guthrie, she is the owner of the famous "Alices Restaurant", and she is also a painter and a designer. Why did Arlo write a song about the restaurant? The story I told you in the paragraph before is basically his song in shorter words, I just summed it up. He wrote the song because apparently he thought the crime he committed at Thanksgiving was funny and wanted to tell the world about it. He wrote the song about Alice because the whole event happened at her house if she didn't have the garbage then the would have not been nice enough to try to drop it off, which means that they would have not got caught by the cops and would not have got arrested. This all was happening when the Vietnam War, one of the rules of getting drafted was you could not get into any trouble or have any run in with the laws. Well Guthrie wanted to go to the army and could not and that is the whole real reasoning for the song. He had nothing really better to do.
I think this blog is a really cool idea. It will be a good way to express the way a lot of us feel and will not have to worry about being embarrassed because every one will be expressing themselves. That is a lot of the reason I think Mr. Neuburger named our blog after this song and really it was not even the song but Guthrie was expressing to every one how he felt and made it fun of it and was not afraid to tell his story. That is why I think Mr. Neubuger named our class blog after the song Alice's Restaurant.
Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy it

Alice's restaurant was a small restaurant that Alice Brock and her husband Ray Brock opened together. The restaurant was named after Alice I'm thinking because it was her restaurant. The restaurant was about 6 miles from where Alice and her husband Ray lived. It was in the small town of Stockbridg,Massachusetts. Alice and her husband lived in a former church in Great Barrington,Massachusetts where they held Thanksgiving dinners. Alice Brock was a teacher that worked in a small school not far from where she lived.

Arlo Guthrie was one of Alice's students. Arlo was also a singer. Arlo and his friend Richard Robbins went to visit Alice and her husband Ray during Thanksgiving. They wanted to help Alice and Ray clean up their home so they offered to take the trash to the dump. Arlo and Richard loaded the trash into their VW microbus and headed for the dump but came to find it closed for Thanksgiving. They drove around until they found a place to dump the trash. They came to a large hill with trash already at the bottom as they fingered one pile of trash would be better than two so they dump it there. On November 25,1965 the two boys was arrested by Officer William Obanhein for illegally dumping. Alice bailed the boys out of jail after having a word or two with Officer Obanhein or from Arlo's song Officer Obie. Two days later the two boys pleaded guilty and where fined $50 and had to pick up all of the trash.

After all this happened Arlo was called up for the draft. Arlo spent all day at the induction center in New York and at the end of the day he was sent to Group W bench. Arlo sat there for awhile then was called back to talk to an officer. The officer told Arlo that because of his criminal record that he was not fit to be in the army. This really upset Arlo, he couldn't believe he was not allowed to fight in the army for being a litterbug. This is when Arlo made up the song Alice's Restaurant. The song tells people about the day Arlo and his friend where arrested for dumping the trash over the hill and how Alice was their friend who had them over for Thanksgiving dinner and how they just wanted to help out. The song goes on to tell people how Arlo was called up for the draft and how they believe he was not fit ti fight in the war. That they seen him as the seen mother rapers and murders.

I really have no clue why Mr. Neuburger was name the blog Alice's Restaurant. It could be because we are going to read Alice in the Wonderland for our first book in class. Mr. Neuburger could have named it Alice's Restaurant because he liked the story and found that it would be a good name for our blog. It also could be that you can find anything in Alice's restaurant; you could say that about your blog. We have so many different people in our class that not everyone is going to think alike. There is going to be many different points of views that you will hardly find any the same. By naming your blog Alice's Restaurant after the song it tells you that you can find many different views and many different things all in one place. This is way I believe Mr. Neuburger named our blog Alice's Restaurant.

Alices Restaurant

Just a half a mile from the railroad tracks in Great Barrington ,Massachusetts was a resturant named Alices Restaurant. This restaurant was located down an alley behind a grocery store just six miles from the owners , Alice and Ray brock. Together Alice and Ray served the nearby neighbors, friends and family. After working both Alice and Ray would meet at there home, they lived in the old Trinity Church where they were visited quite often by close friends and spiritual individuals. Arlo Guthie whom lived with the Brocks, and worked for the Brocks was a close friend, a singinger and a song writer. Alice and Arlo would get together and sing folk songs for their members at the church.

It was Thanksgiving day and as ususal many of the Brocks friends and family all joined together including Arlo's friend Rick Robbins to celebrate the holiday. It had been along night of eating, celebrating and full of laughs. That night Arlo and friend Rick felt so greatful for the Brocks kindness and gratitude they felt it was their job to clean up all the garbage found in the church. So Arlo and Rick loaded what looked to be a truck full of garbage. On their way to the dump they noticed it was closed. They had forgot it was Thanksgiving, nothing would be open today. So both Arlo and Rick thought long and hard of what to do with the garbage, their best bet was to dump the garbage on the side of the road. While dumping the garbage Arlo had what seemed to be a great idea, to take an envelope with his name on it and place it under the garbage. He knew he was committing a crime and once you have committed a crime you can not be drafted into the war. Arlo dreaded going to the war, he was a man of protest against war, fighting ,and hippies.

The next day Arlo received a call from the town police officer by the name of William Obanhein, Obie for short. Obie asked Arlo if he had committed the crime of the garbage dumping on the side of the road, Arlo pleaded quilting to crime. Not long after,Obie made his way to pick Arlo up at the Brocks home. Walking out to the cop car, Alice stopped Arlo and asked him what was going on. Arlo confessed to Alice about the dumping of the garbage, and now he would be going to jail. Obie explained to Alice that Arlo would be fined fifty dollars and one night in jail.

While sitting in the jail, Arlo thought about all the tarable things involved with the war, protesting, and all the hippies getting away doing drugs ans causing violence. Seeing how Arlo and his buddies liked to write folk songs, Arlo began writing his own song, but did not finish it. Not long after Alice bailed Arlo out of jail, the Army called Arlo up for his drafting, but quickly found he had a criminal record and rejected him.

Several days after Arlo's crime and the call from the Army, Arlo showed Alice his ideas of the song he began to write while he was in jail, and Alice quickly joined in on finishing the song. Togeher they came up with several nifty tunes and lyrics.and decided to name the song Alice's Restaurant. Here are some of the lyrics from the song:

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

You can get anything you want at Alice's RestaurantWalk right in it's around the back

Just a half a mile from the railroad track

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

The two of them combined lyrics from Arlo past history and the events which happened at Alice's Restaurant. Both Arlo and Alice began singing their song at the church and performing for their friends and family.

Overall I think this is a pretty odd story, well story slash song. I dont really understand why Mr. Nueburger would pick this topic to write about. Maybe it was because back in his day, he was heavly on drugs and committed a crime and could not get drafted into the war. (Just a thought) Maybe Mr. Nueburger chose this topic because all his students would come up different answers to the reason why he chose this topic. Well my number one guess would have to be that Mr. Nueburger was just this young hippie protesting against war, standing on the side of the streets with his little cardboard sign saying the oh so precious statement " Peace not War." That night him and his buddy Ron gathered a whole bunch "Garbage" threw it into the truck and headed their way to the nearest police officer's house. Throwing the garbage as fast as they could but not realizing a letter had fallen out of Mr. N's pocket stateing his name and address. Heading home from what they thought was the most funniest rush of their lifes, they didnt know what the next day had in store for them. The next morning Mr.N woke up to his screaming, furious mother, the ploice officer called his home and now Mr. N would fined fifhty dollars and one night in jail.
Boy did he learn his lesson, that's why I think Mr. N choose Alice's Restaurant.

Thanks for reading,

Alice's Restaurant

Alice M. Brock and her husband Ray Brock lived in the bell tower of the former Trinity Church on Division Street in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Alice was a painter and a designer, Ray was an architect and woodworker. Both worked at a nearby private academy from which Arlo Guthrie graduated. Arlo Guthrie was a friend of Alice and Ray, they allowed for Arlo and Rick to come join them in their home. Arlo and Rick got a brilliant idea on thanksgiving morning 1965, they decided to help the brocks out, by cleaning up there garbage out of the church. They drove to the city dump, and saw a sign which said closed for the holiday. Arlo decided to take it to this side road by the music camp, that he went to one summer. They drove up the hill and dumped it off the cliff. Then they drove back to Alice's Restaurant, and had a beautiful thanksgiving feast. Police Chief Obanhein came over to the Brock's home, and said he found a envelope with the name brock on it at the bottom of a bunch of trash. The two boys finally confesed to doing it as a nice gesture for the brocks. On November 26, 1965 officer obanhein took the boys off to jail. Soon the boys dear friend Alice showed up and called officer obanhein every name that came to her mind. She handed over the boys bail money and they went to court in the town of Lee. The boys pleaded Guilty, your honor," were fined $25 each and had to go pick the trash up they threw over the cliff.

A little bit after Arlo's arrest he got call, saying he is being drafted to the military. He went to check in and they called him unfit to be in the military. They claimed him unfit because of his arrest, and so now he's a free man. So know people who are trying to avoid a draft there's three ways. Burn your draft cards, flee the country and commit a crime. Before the draft call, Arlo and Rick had begun to write "Alice's Restaurant," and after the draft call Arlo finished it adding what had happened when he checked in to the military for the draft.

Alice's Restaurant is a song that Arlo Guthrie wrote, its 18minutes and 20 seconds long. Its a talk- song about a deadpan protest against the Vietnam War draft and widespread anti-hippie prejudice. Arlo Guthrie's famous song, was released in August 19, 1969, it was called Alice's Restaurant after his song.

Is alice's Restaurant a real place or not?

Alice's Restaurant is a real place in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The restaurant is actually six miles from the church. Alice brock only owned the restaurant for one year before divorcing her husband Ray.

I think Mr. Neuberger picked Alice's Restaurant because he dumped a bunch of garbage to get out of something he didnt want to do. He's also into the hippie stuff. I pretty much don't know why he picked it just throwing something out there.

Alices Restaurant

On Thanksgiving Day in 1965, Alices Restarunt was brought to life. It all started in Barrington, Massachusetts at a small restarunt, owned by a woman named Alice Brock. Ironically, the restarunt was named after Alice herself. Alice was a painter, designer and lived in a church bell tower with her husband Ray down the road from her restarunt. Alice had a friend named Arlo Gurthie who was a free spirited hippy musican, and little did anyone know, whould make history by trying to do a friend a simple favor on thanksgiving. Arlo who was eighteen at the time along with his friend Richard Robbins who was 19 went to Alices restarunt thanksgiving day 1965 and saw that alice had alot of garbage piled up. They decided to be friendly and take her trash to the city dump. As Arlo and Richard got to the dump a big sign was strung across the fence reading "closed for thanksgiving day" They were fustrated and drove to the edge of town to a cliff side, seeing other garbage already dumped over the cliff, the boys illegally dumped the trash to the ground below.

The next morning they recived a phone call from the police station saying that an envelope had been recovered from the trash pile with arlos name on it. They were asked to come to the station. Arlo and Richard were honest and said they had dumped the trash. In turn they were arrested and taken to jail by Officer William "Obie" Obanhein for illegally littering on a holiday. Alice was at the jail soon, and bailed the boys out. The returned to alices church home, sat down to dinner, and began writing a song. Two days later they plead guilty in court before a blind judge. They were fined $50 and were told to pick the trash up. This ordeal happened in the heat of the Vietnam war draft. A few weeks after their arrest, Arlo was sent to see a military psychiatrist, who questioned him about the draft. Arlo exclaimed "Im ready to kill, KILL KILL!" It was then that the sargent came over and pinned a medal on Arlos shirt saying "Your our boy!" As he proceeded along the draft questioning he was found to have a criminal record. It was said that boys who were to be drafted, were not supposed to have a criminal record, so he was turned down for the draft for littering. Arlo quoted, ""I'm sittin here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug?"

Arlo became inspired after his arrest and began composing a song, speaking out about his arrest and the fact he was kicked out of the draft for such a small offense as littering. While thousands of boys were fleeing to Canada, and burnig their draft cards to avoid the war, Arlo was kept from the war for littering. In his eyes he had the morals to fight in vietnam for his counrty, but was denied the for the simple offense of littering.

Arlos song Alices Restaurant, became a whoping 18 minutes and 20 second blues based song protesting the draft, and the war in Vietnam. He was so mad that the fact that he littered was going to keep him from the war, when what he called "father rapers and "mother reapers" who were in his eyes mean and nasty crime-type men, were going to get to fight. The final part of the song is where Arlo tells the audience that if they find themselves facing the draft they should walk into the military psychiatrist's office and sing, "Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant," and walk out. The original alubum rose to #17 on the Billboard charts. Its also regulary played on thanksgiving on many radio stations especially around the New York and Boston areas. A movie version of "Alice's Restaurant" was released on August 19, 1969, a few days after Guthrie appeared at the Woodstock Festival. His musical talent and strong words made a huge dent in music and history in general.

I believe Mr. N chose this because he digs the activism era of the 60's genaration. Arlo was obviously a tripped out hippy who dumped some trash, got caught and was arrested. He then was kept from the Vietnam draft for the small offense of littering. He had the courage to go to war but was not accepted to fight for his country. In turn, he stood up for what he believed in by writing a song. Mr N. was inspired by his movement against "the man" and unfairness.

I hope you enjoyed your read :)
Keep Rockin.

Alice's restaurant

Alice's restaurant is a musical based on a true story that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965, and which inspired a 1969 movie of the same name. The song lasts 18 minutes and 20 seconds, covering the entire A-side of Guthrie's 1967 debut record album. The whole story is real it is based on the life of a boy who doesn't to get drafted into the army. Alice M. Brock is the main character in the story who owns Alice's restaurant.in 1964, using $2,000 supplied by her mother, bought a church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where Alice and her husband Ray lived.
The reason they named the restaurant after her is because she was the one that owned it, and she was the main character of the story. Arlo Guthrie is the writer of the story, he is a singer/song writer. he made the song because he wanted to encourage listeners to sing along, to resist the draft, and to end war. He wanted the song to let people know how bad the was was and how they shouldn't join because it could ruin your life or end it, but it was also about how the government shouldn't be able to draft people when they want it should be about what the people want to do.
When they wanted him to join the army he wanted to do something so that he didn't have to go join, so what he did was he went and dumped a bunch of trash out some where so that he would get a ticket a not be able to join, but when he did this he had to go to court. when he got into the court he had a blind judge. after the hearing he got rejected from the army and didn't have to go. He got fined $50 and had to pick up trash in the snow.
The song goes on to describe Guthrie's being called up for the draft, and the surreal bureaucracy at the new york city induction center on Whitehall street . Because of Guthrie's criminal record for littering, he is first sent to the Group W Bench, where the convicts have to wait and then get actual rejected from the military. Arlo tells the audience that should they find themselves facing the draft they should walk into the military psychiatrist's office and sing, Shrink, You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant, and walk out.

Alice's Restaurant

In Barrington, Massachusetts there is a restaurant called Alice's Restaurant. This restaurant is located inside a church where owners Alice and Ray Brock live. Alice has a friend named Arlo Guthrie. Arlo writes songs about protests, composes music, is a lifelong political activist, and a musician. He also named her restaurant for her. In the year 1965 Arlo and his friend Roger Robbins were trying to do something nice for Alice, so they illegally dumped some of her garbage on Thanksgiving Day. Then they loaded it all up in their red Volkswagon Microbus and headed to the city dump, but little did they know the garbage dump was closed on Thanksgiving. When Arlo and Roger found out the dump was closed they kept driving, searching for another place to dump the garbage. They soon found a side road where they saw someone else's garbage sitting there, on the other side of the cliff they discovered some more garbage, so they came to a conclusion and dumped their garbage there also. Then Arlo and Roger then went back home to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner that they could not miss.

The reason why Arlo and his friend had so much garbage to dump was because there were not any pews in the church, so this is where the trash was collected until they ran out of space. The morning after Arlo Guthrie and Roger Robbins dumped garbage on a side road Arlo got a phone call from Officer Obanhein saying that he found an envelope under the dumped garbage with Arlo's name on it and asked him if he had any more information to tell him about the garbage. So Arlo confessed saying that there is no way he could tell a lie and said that he did dump the trash. Unfortunately, Officer Obanhein ordered Arlo and Roger to pick up the garbage, gave them fines, and imprisoned them. When Arlo was released from jail, Officer William "Obie" Obanhein placed Arlo Guthrie in a room with people that Arlo referred to as "mother and father rapers". The reason why Arlo named Alice's Restaurant after Alice Brock is because it was her garbage that he dumped and she paid his court fines for him in the approximate amount of fifty dollars. Since Arlo was being drafted to the military, he had to go for his physical but he was denied and declared "unfit" because of his criminal record that they discovered. Actually it turned out that Arlo dumped the garbage with and envelope with his name addressed on the front so he would get caught and could not be drafted to the military.

Soon enough Arlo wrote a song which was a protest against the Vietnam War Draft and against hippies. Then later, not only was Alice's Restaurant a restaurant, but also a song and a movie. He wrote so many things, the song ended up being just slightly over 18 minutes long. This real story turned out to be a famous movie and piece of music.

Some of the lyrics to the song that Arlo wrote about Alice's Restaurant are:
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile to the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

I think that Mr. Neuburger chose Alice's Restaurant for our Applied Communications class to blog about because I believe that once upon a time he was in a slight different state of mind when he and a friend decided to do something illegal on a holiday so they would not have to be drafted into the military.

Alice's Restaurant

What is Alice's Restaurant?

Alice's Restaurant is both a song and an actual place. The song was inspired by the place, well more like the event that happened there. The song was written by Arlo Guthrie, which is where it all started. In 1964 Alice M. Brock, using the money that her mother gave her, bought a church in Barrington Massachusetts where her and her husband lived. Alice was a painter and a designer, while her husband, Ray, was a woodworker and architect. They both worked at a nearby academy from which Guthrie had graduated. Alice's Restaurant was located about six miles from the church. Alice only owned it for a year before her and her husband were divorced.

Is Alice's Restaurant a real or fictional place?

At one time Alice's Restaurant was a real place. It was located six miles from Alice Brock's home in 1965. Alice Brock had owned it for a year but now it is known as Theresa's Stockbridge Cafe.

Who is Alice?

Alice Brock was the woman who owned the restaurant that was pretty much the source and inspiration for Arlo Guthrie's song "Alice's Restaurant". It was her restaurant that Guthrie had gotten the trash from and where it all started for him. As of 2005, Alice lives in Provincetown, Massachusettes, and owns an art gallery and studio. She has also illustrated the book "Mooses Come Walking", which was written by Guthrie.

Who is Arlo Guthrie?

Arlo Guthrie is an American folk singer who, like his father , often sings songs that protest social injustice. His most famous piece was of course "Alice's Restaurant". Guthrie was born in Brooklyn, New York, and is the son of folk singer and composer Woody Guthrie. He graduated from the Stockbridge school of Massachusetts in 1965, which was where Alice and her husband worked, and attended Rocky Mountain College for a short period for a time. Guthrie carries on the legacy of his father as a singer, songwriter, and lifelong politics activist. He was also awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience award on September 26, 1992.

Why would he write a song about Alice's Restaurant?

I believe that he wrote the song to prove a point, that the things that went on were absurd. Like the fact that he was considered unfit to join the military and fight for his country for a little offense as littering, not because he had murdered someone but because he had littered.

What is the song about?

The song was about the many different things that had happened to Guthrie that had all started with helping out a friend. On November 25, 1965 a man named Arlo Guthrie and his friend were arrested by sheriff William Obenhein for illegally dumping garbage from Alice's restaurant in a dump that was closed for the holiday. Two days later they pleaded guilty and both were fined $50 dollars and told to pick up their trash. Guthrie later been called for draft examination because of his record of a single arrest for littering he was considered unfit to serve. After all this happened he was inspired to write the song "Alice's Restaurant Massacre" also known as Alice's Restaurant. The song is now usually played on Thanksgiving in the New York, Boston area. Other than that it is not played because of the fact that it is a little over 18 minutes long. Guthrie later revised the song to protest some policies during the Regan-era, but this version was never released. He later wrote a follow up after he learned that Nixon had actually owned a copy of the song and he jokingly suggested that this was the reason for the 18 minute gap in the Watergate tapes.

Why did Mr. Neuburger name the blog Alice's Restaurant?

I think that Mr. Neuburger named the blog Alice's Restaurant because of the song that was about an actual event that occurred. Also in the song they say that you can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant, Mr. Neuburger told us that we are gonna be doing many different things in the blog and therefore, you can get anything you want.

Alice's Restaurant ll

Alice's restaurant is a song written in 1967 by Arlo Guthrie. Alice owned a restaurant down the street from her home which was also a small distance from the railroad tracks. Her and her husband bought a church for two thousand dollars in 1964, and made it their home. Alice was a painter and a disigner and her husband Ray, was an architect and a woodworker. This song was all started on a thanksgiving day when Arlo and his friend went to visit Alice and her husband at their home. As a favor Arlo and his friend decided that the would take Alice's trash to the dump. So they loaded up the trash and headed for the dump, but when they arrived to the dump they saw a sign which said "closed for thanksgiving day". So on the way home they dumped the trash off of the side of the road where there was already some trash. They returned to Alice's home where they ate a Thanksgiving dinner. After dinner they went to bed and didn't think about what they had done that day, which wasnt that big of a deal. The next morning when they woke up they received a phone call from officer Obie. The officer said that he had found some trash in the bottom of a ravine and in the trash there was an envelope with Arlo's name and address. At first Arlo denied the situation, but after a few minutes he finally admitted to the crime. Officer Obie then told the boys to meet him at the police station so they could settle what had happend. When the boys arrived they received the last thing they had expected. The officer immediately arrested them and put them into the patrol car. Now in town there were two police officers and only one patrol car in town. Officer Obie took the boys to where they had littered and when they arrived the boys saw several police cars and officers observing the situation. The boys then realized the police were very serious. There were officers there who were taking photos and making the situation a big ordeal. The boy's were then taken back to the police station and were put into a cell. A few hours later Alice arrived with a bit of a temper and bailed them out of jail. The next morning they were to go before a judge for the crime they had commited. So the next day they went to the courtroom and saw that officer Obie had several pictures of the trash for poof. Ironically when the judge can in, he was blind. In the end they were fined fifty dollars and were told to pick up the trash.
While all this was happening there was a war on the other side of the world in Vietnam. Many men were drafted and had to fight in the war. Others tried to avoid the war by fleeing to another country or they would burn their draft cards and hope they were not caught. However when Arlo went to sign up for the draft he found that he could not go to war because he had a criminal record. He did not understand why he could not go to war for littering when those who go to war are killing and destroying homes. This is what inspired Arlo to write the song. The song was eighteen minutes and twenty seconds long and was a great hit. The song rose into the top twenty on the billboard charts. Arlo's song is now played on many radio stations on thanksgiving day. I think Mr N chose this topic to make us realize that we should speak our opinion such as Arlo Guthrie did. Arlo was a person who loved his country and wanted to help in the war, but he was prevented from doing so because he had littered. His frustration is what made this song available to us today.

Alices Restaurant II

Alices Restaurant is about a song , the writer of this song is Arlo Guthrie, the song is an encouragement for the listeners to sing along with the song as there listening and understanding what the song is meaning , and also to try to convince people to resist the draft and hopefully end the war . This all took place in1965, during the Vietnam war. Arlo Guthrie did not think the war was a good idea , but the military still was trying to draft him, but they could not join. They wouldn't let him join because of a little bit of trouble he got into.

Arlo and got caught dumping illegally and got arrested, he got fined fifty dollars and was assigned to go pickup the garbage that he dumped, after he picked up the garbage. The police man "Obie" found Arlo Guthrie name on a envelope at the bottom of the cliff where Arlo and his friend dumped there trash. The following morning officer Obie called Arlo and said that they found the garbage that he had dumped and needed him to come down to the station. When Arlo got down to the station Obie put Arlo into a cell, and asked him for his wallet and belt, Arlo ask Obie" i understand you taking my wallet but why my belt"? Obie answer by sawing Arlo we do not need any hangings happening in this jail house, then Arlo smarted off and said something about taking the toilet seat off to, because he could easily drown himself with the seat being on there, so Obie took the toilet seat off to. After all of the garbage was picked up he had to go before a court and see if he was cleared. The judge that was determining Arlo Guthrie conviction was blind. Since his conviction and being proven guilty he was kicked out of the draft and could not join the military. The military wouldn't allow anyone to be drafted that had a criminal recored and Arlo Guthrie did.

Alices restaurant is based on a true story, the reason Arlo Guthrie decided to write this song was because he experienced what the songs about. Some more interesting information about Alices Restaurant is that it has nothing to do with what the songs about, i really do not understand what Arlo is getting at when he chose to name his song Alices Resteraunt . The song lasts eighteen minutes and twenty seconds, its a very long song. Alice M Brock and her husband Ray Brock was a owner of a restaurant, that was originally a church. Alice Brock was a painter and designer and Ray Brock was a wood worker and architect . Alices restaurant was formally known as " The Back Room Rest".

People that did not want to go to the Vietnam war had a couple of choices, they could either skip state and leave and go to Canada , or Mexico. They could also burn there draft cards, but if they did that they were technically criminals. After burning there draft cards, if they were to get stopped or get into trouble for anything, the police would run a check on them and when it checked out that they did not go to fight in the war like they were suppose to, they would go straight to jail. There was alot of people that thought going to jail was worth not going to fight for there country.

I think Mr. Neuburger chose this song because in the song "Alices Restaurant" it tries to convince the listeners that you can accomplish anything that you want as long as you fight for it, and work at it. I believe that you chose this title because you want us to realize that we can do anything that we put our mind to, as long as were willing to work for it and work at it. I just think that you basically chose this to us to give us a assignment and get us back into the work ethic. And you want us to realize that anything is possible. Thank you so much for reading and i hope you enjoyed your self while you were reading the 100 % material.

Alice's Restaurant II

Alice's Restaurant is a song wrote by Arlo Guthrie. The song is about protesting the Vietnam War and was part of the hippie movement. The restaurant is not just a song but is an actual place. The restaurant was owned by Alice Brock who was a good friend of Arlo Guthrie. The restaurant was made out of a church which Alice and her husband bought. The couple also lived in the church as well as ran a restaurant. As told in the song its about Alice and the restaurant thats why he names Alice's Restaurant.

The song all started on Thanksgiving in 1965 when Arlo and his friend went to Alice's house and picked up there garbage as a nice thing to do and was going to take it down to the dump. But not knowing that the dumb was closed on thanksgiving the two friends take it anyways. When they got there they then realized it was closed. So they took off back to the church and saw off a cliff two trash bags. And as said in the some instead of picking the bags up they just made the pill of trash bigger. After doing so the boys drive home and eat thanksgiving dinner with their friends at the church. The next moring Arlo gets a call from officer Obie from the police department. Obie asks if he had anything to do with the trash thrown out and Arlo says yes he sure did so he was asked to come down to the department for questioning. Arlo thinkin that he was just gonna tell him to go pick up the trash and to not ever do it again but as he got there he saw that wasn't just what was going to happen. He got there and realized that he was going to be arrested for littering. And as you all hopefully know that this was in the time of the Vietnam War just keep that in mind. Alight being the biggest crime in the last fifty years they used everything they could so that they could pin this crime on the boys. As we came into the court Obie had all sorts of pictures and stuff so that he could show the judge but when the judge walked in with a seeing eye dog Obie realized that the pictures weren't gonna help him in any way. At the end the boys were just fined $50 and had to pick up the trash in the snow.

After that he went to New York to the draft building and went in and they shot him down and made him feel bad and sent him to the shrink and he told the shrink he wanted to kill, kill ,kill and the sargent told him that he was thier boy and sent him down the hall. As he walked further and further down the hall he finally came to the last guy where he asked him have you ever been arrested and of course Arlo told him the story of the Alice's Restaraunt Massacre and the man told him to go sit with group w. There on that bench say's Arlo were mother rapers, father stabbers and father rapers. The sargent came in and told everyone on the bench to write what the crime and all the details about it. As he was sitting there and wrote a harmony about the crime he had committed he looked on the othe side and the paper said "Kid, Have you rehabbilited yourself.

Arlo walked to the sargent and said i cant believe you asked if i have rehabbilited myself all i did was litter. Sargent reponded with "we dont like your kink, and we are gonna send your fingerprints to Washington D.C"

Said in the song "the only reason i'm writing this song is because if you ever see yourself in this situation or know someone in this kind of situation to just walk into the shrinks office and sing you can get anything you want at Alice's Restaraunt and walk out. In doing this the shrink will think your really sick and they wont take you but if two walk in and sing it they will think your gay and they wont take you but if three do it then they will think your in an organization and wont take you but if fifty do it that is a movement and thats what Alice's Restaraunt is about a movement". He feels that if you wanna end war and anything else you feel strongly against you must say your part out loud and proud and let everyone know about it.

Why Mr. N named the blog sight after this song i dont really know for sure but i can tell you why i think he did it. In my oppinion he named it after that because he wants us to say what we feel and no be ashamed of it, let people know what you feel and why you feel it. Have meaning to what you say and what you want people to know. In doing that i feel he thinks it will make us better writers because what we are writing we truely believe in that.

Alice's Restaurant

Alice M. Brock was a Painter and designer, in 1964 she and her husband Ray bought a church in which they would live in with 2,000 dollars that was given to her by her mother in Great Barrington Massachusetts. Alice and Ray had done alot of work to the old church, things like taking the pews out and cleaning out old things. Thier friend Arlo Guthrie which was a folk singer had stoped into town to see them. When Arlo Guthrie gets to their house he sees alot of garbage. So he decided it'd be a friendly gesture for him to take the garbage down to the city dump. So he took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW microbus and went off. When they got to the city dump there was a big sign and a chain across the city dump saying, "Closed on Thanksgiving." He had never seen that before so Arlo just went off trying to find another dump. He drove and drove and he didn't find one. Until he came to a side road, and off the side of the road there was a fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the cliff there was another pile of garbage. So Arlo decided that one big pile of garbage is better than two little piles of garbage. So Arlo decided to throw his garbage down the cliff. So Arlo got back into his car and drove back to the church for a Thanksgiving dinner. Arlo then recived a phone call the next morning from officer Obie He said " We found your name on an envelope at the bottom of a half ton of garbage, and just wanted to know if you had any information about it." Arlo said "Yes, sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie, I put that envelope under that garbage." After Arlo was done speaking to officer Obie on the phone, Obie told Arlo that he had to go down and pick up the garbage, and also had to go down and speak to him at the police station, so Arlo got into the car with the shovels and headed on toward the station. When Arlo arrived at the station officer obie handcuffed him, Arlo then asked " Obie, I don't think I can pick up the garbage with these handcuffs on." Officer Obie said, "shut up, kid, get in the back of the potrol car and drove to the so called crime scene, when Arlo and officer Obie arrived there were five police officers and three police cars being the biggest crime of the last fifty five years , and everybody wanted to get the story. So officer Obie took Arlo back to the jail house Arlo wasn't there four or five hours when Alice showed up. Alice came by and with a few nasty words to officer Obie on the side, bailed Arlo out of jail , and they went back to the church , And had another thanksgiving dinner. So the next morning Arlo got up and went to the court house. when Arlo arrived at the Court house he walked in and sat down, officer obie was there to. Awhile later a man came in and said, "All Rise." Arlo stood up and officer Obie stood up . Then the Judge walked in with an seeing eye dog and sat down. Officer Obie told the judge what had happend and the judge fined Arlo $50 dollars and to pick up the garbage in the snow. Not shortly after this happend Arlo got drafted and had to go and get checked out so Arlo went to a building down New York city it's called WhiteHall street. Arlo went down to get his physical examination, he walked in and they gave Arlo a piece of paper, and said, "kid see the phsychiatrist, room 604." So Arlo went up there, and said, "shrink I want to kill. I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on Arlo and sent me down the hall, and said "You're our boy." But Arlo didn't feel too good about it. Arlo proceeded on down the hall it seemed like he had been there for two hours, three hours. Arlo finally came to the see the last name , he walked in , sat down the man asked him " kis, we only got one question. Have you ever been arrested?" So Arlo proceeded to tell him the whole big story and then the man said " kid, did you ever go to court?" And Arlo said yes so the man said go and sit on the bench. Arlo sat there for a long while then the sargent asked him " kid have you rehablliated yourself?" Arlo was mad and said that it was pretty low . Not to let him in because he got a ticket for garbage. So then Arlo wrote a song and there was later a movie produced about this.

In my opinion I think that Mr. Neuburger named our class blog after this because Arlo Guthrie was a strong person know matter what was thrown his way he made something of it and I think that is what he wants us to do be a strong Person. If something stupid like a trash ticket don't let us be in the military then go and do someting about it don't set and be a baby go and make something happen. So in closing that is why he picked the theme Alices Resturant for our blog.

My response to the first assignment

What is Alice's Restaurant?

Alice’s Restaurant was a song based on a place and an event that took place there on one thanks giving. Arlo Guthrie wrote and sang the song. The restaurant was located six miles away from a church that Alice M. Brock bought with money her mother gave her. Alice and her husband, Ray, lived in that church. Alice was a painter and designer, while Ray was an architect and wood worker. They both worked at the academy from which Arlo Guthrie had graduated. She only had the restaurant for a year before she and her husband got divorced.

Is it a real or fictional place?

Alice’s Restaurant is a real place. It was six miles away from the church in which Alice lived and half a mile away from the train tracks. Alice Brock used to own it , but now it is Theresa’s Stockbridge CafĂ©.

Who is Alice?

Alice’s full name is Alice M. Brock. She owned the restaurant that Arlo Guthrie sings of in the song. She owns an art gallery and studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Where she now lives. She also drew the pictures in the book “Mooses Come Walking”, which was written by Arlo Guthrie.

Why name a restaurant after her?

The Restaurant, of course, was named after her because she owned it.

Who is Arlo Guthrie?

Arlo Guthrie is an American folk singer who has a tendency to sing about the various problem he has with our government. He was most famous for the song “Alice’s Restaurant”. He is a Brooklyn, New York Native. His father is composer and folk singer Woody Guthrie. In 1965 he graduated from the Stockbridge School of Massachusetts, where he met Alice and her husband, Ray. He went to Rocky Mountain College for a little while. Arlo Guthrie has spent his life following in the footsteps of his father as a singer, song writer, and political activist. Lastly, he won the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience award on September 26 of 1992.

Why would he write a song about Alice's restaurant?

I think he wrote the song because what happened was ridiculous. He should he been able to join the army in spite of the fact that he once littered. He thought it was stupid that you had to be a modern day saint to be able to go kill innocent people.

What is the song about?

Alice's Restaurant is about a man not being able to join the army because of a former arrest. Arlo Guthrie sings about how he and a friend did his friend Alice a Thanks Giving favor by taking her trash to the dump for her. When they got to the dump the found out it was closed and looked for another place to dump the trash. They ended up just dumping it off with another pile of litter. The next day they got a call from the police department about it. They thought they were just going to have to pick up the trash after going down to the police depart, but when they got there they were immediately arrested. Alice bailed them out that night. When they went to court the justice was blind and couldn't see the evidence being held against them, so they just had to pick the trash up and pay a fifty dollar fine. Then the time for him to report to the draft board came. When he got there he told them that all he wanted to do was kill people. They said he was perfect for the job, then asked him if he had ever been arrested. He then confessed to being a litterbug and was told to sit on the w bench. After waiting for a little while he was denied entrance into the army.

Why would the song inspire Mr. N to name our class blog after it?

I think he named our class blog after this song and event because he also think that it’s ridiculous to not be able to go fight for your country in a war because you’re a convicted litterer.

Welcome!

Welcome to Alice's Restaurant. I hope you had a remarkable summer. We will be accomplishing some pretty amazing things this year in Applied Communications. The primary goals for this class are to create various forms of digital media and publish these creations on the World Wide Web. Have you heard of Web 2.0? We will be utilizing Web 2.0 extensively this year, and as a matter of fact, we are using it right now on this blog. Most of us probably use it and don't realize it. If you use Google for a search engine, you have been using Web 2.0.

A good deal of our work will be posted here on the blog. What work am I talking about? Well, we will be interacting with each other as we read and respond to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, heretofore referred as AAIW. We will then create podcasts, create some video, and finish the year with some group projects. If everything works out well we may manage to work in some claymation projects.

However, we will begin the year with a mini-research project. Over the next two class periods we you will need to determine the answers to the following questions:

  1. What is Alice's Restaurant?
  2. Is it a real or fictional place?
  3. Who is Alice?
  4. Why name a restaurant after her?
  5. Who is Arlo Guthrie?
  6. Why would he write a song about Alice's Restaurant?
  7. What is the song about?
  8. Why would this song inspire Mr. N to name our class blog after it?
Your assignment is to post a 700 word summary of your findings. I have posted a Wikipedia link at the top of the page to get you started. Cite the sources of your information. You will need at least two sources cited to complete the summary. You do not need to answer all of the questions above, but you must answer the last one.
