Alices Restaurant

Just a half a mile from the railroad tracks in Great Barrington ,Massachusetts was a resturant named Alices Restaurant. This restaurant was located down an alley behind a grocery store just six miles from the owners , Alice and Ray brock. Together Alice and Ray served the nearby neighbors, friends and family. After working both Alice and Ray would meet at there home, they lived in the old Trinity Church where they were visited quite often by close friends and spiritual individuals. Arlo Guthie whom lived with the Brocks, and worked for the Brocks was a close friend, a singinger and a song writer. Alice and Arlo would get together and sing folk songs for their members at the church.

It was Thanksgiving day and as ususal many of the Brocks friends and family all joined together including Arlo's friend Rick Robbins to celebrate the holiday. It had been along night of eating, celebrating and full of laughs. That night Arlo and friend Rick felt so greatful for the Brocks kindness and gratitude they felt it was their job to clean up all the garbage found in the church. So Arlo and Rick loaded what looked to be a truck full of garbage. On their way to the dump they noticed it was closed. They had forgot it was Thanksgiving, nothing would be open today. So both Arlo and Rick thought long and hard of what to do with the garbage, their best bet was to dump the garbage on the side of the road. While dumping the garbage Arlo had what seemed to be a great idea, to take an envelope with his name on it and place it under the garbage. He knew he was committing a crime and once you have committed a crime you can not be drafted into the war. Arlo dreaded going to the war, he was a man of protest against war, fighting ,and hippies.

The next day Arlo received a call from the town police officer by the name of William Obanhein, Obie for short. Obie asked Arlo if he had committed the crime of the garbage dumping on the side of the road, Arlo pleaded quilting to crime. Not long after,Obie made his way to pick Arlo up at the Brocks home. Walking out to the cop car, Alice stopped Arlo and asked him what was going on. Arlo confessed to Alice about the dumping of the garbage, and now he would be going to jail. Obie explained to Alice that Arlo would be fined fifty dollars and one night in jail.

While sitting in the jail, Arlo thought about all the tarable things involved with the war, protesting, and all the hippies getting away doing drugs ans causing violence. Seeing how Arlo and his buddies liked to write folk songs, Arlo began writing his own song, but did not finish it. Not long after Alice bailed Arlo out of jail, the Army called Arlo up for his drafting, but quickly found he had a criminal record and rejected him.

Several days after Arlo's crime and the call from the Army, Arlo showed Alice his ideas of the song he began to write while he was in jail, and Alice quickly joined in on finishing the song. Togeher they came up with several nifty tunes and lyrics.and decided to name the song Alice's Restaurant. Here are some of the lyrics from the song:

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

You can get anything you want at Alice's RestaurantWalk right in it's around the back

Just a half a mile from the railroad track

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

The two of them combined lyrics from Arlo past history and the events which happened at Alice's Restaurant. Both Arlo and Alice began singing their song at the church and performing for their friends and family.

Overall I think this is a pretty odd story, well story slash song. I dont really understand why Mr. Nueburger would pick this topic to write about. Maybe it was because back in his day, he was heavly on drugs and committed a crime and could not get drafted into the war. (Just a thought) Maybe Mr. Nueburger chose this topic because all his students would come up different answers to the reason why he chose this topic. Well my number one guess would have to be that Mr. Nueburger was just this young hippie protesting against war, standing on the side of the streets with his little cardboard sign saying the oh so precious statement " Peace not War." That night him and his buddy Ron gathered a whole bunch "Garbage" threw it into the truck and headed their way to the nearest police officer's house. Throwing the garbage as fast as they could but not realizing a letter had fallen out of Mr. N's pocket stateing his name and address. Heading home from what they thought was the most funniest rush of their lifes, they didnt know what the next day had in store for them. The next morning Mr.N woke up to his screaming, furious mother, the ploice officer called his home and now Mr. N would fined fifhty dollars and one night in jail.
Boy did he learn his lesson, that's why I think Mr. N choose Alice's Restaurant.

Thanks for reading,

I liked your thought on why Mr.N chose this song. It really incriminates him and that is funny.
